Nyamira County Referral Hospital in western Kenya has performed its first total hip replacement surgeries, a milestone that officials say will reduce the need for patients to travel outside the county for specialized orthopedic care.
The hospital completed two procedures in a single three-hour operation, led by a team of surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and rehabilitation specialists. Both patients had been living with severe hip conditions that limited their mobility and daily activities.
Surgeries part of broader push to expand local care
Governor Amos Nyaribo called the surgeries a sign of the county’s growing ability to handle complex medical procedures without outside referrals. He credited Dr. Jared Oeba, the county’s director of medical services and an orthopedic surgeon, along with the entire surgical team for the successful operations.
“With this milestone, Nyamira County Referral Hospital now has the capacity, expertise, and infrastructure to routinely offer total hip replacement surgery,” Nyaribo said. The county has already scheduled additional patients for similar procedures, suggesting the service will become a regular part of the hospital’s offerings.
Total hip replacement involves removing damaged sections of the hip joint and replacing them with artificial components. The procedure is typically used for patients with advanced arthritis, trauma, or degenerative diseases that have severely damaged the joint.

Before the hospital began offering the surgery, residents who needed hip replacements often had to travel to larger referral hospitals in other counties. That journey added financial and emotional strain, particularly for patients already dealing with chronic pain and limited mobility.
Rehabilitation and long-term plans
After the surgeries, both patients entered a structured rehabilitation program designed to help them regain strength and movement. The hospital’s ability to provide follow-up care locally is expected to improve recovery outcomes and reduce complications.
The county government said the new service aligns with its broader strategy to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and expand access to specialized treatments. Governor Nyaribo also acknowledged the Department of Health Services, led by County Executive Committee Member Dr. Donald Mogoi, for its role in supporting the initiative.
Nyamira’s investment in surgical capacity reflects a trend in Kenya’s devolved health system, where county governments are working to bring advanced care closer to rural populations. While major teaching hospitals in Nairobi and other urban centers have long offered joint replacements, smaller regional facilities have only recently begun developing similar capabilities.
The hospital’s next steps include scaling up the number of procedures and potentially adding other complex orthopedic surgeries. For now, the focus remains on ensuring the two initial patients recover fully—and on proving the hospital can deliver the same standard of care as larger, more distant facilities.
